Give me a person who discusses When I was young, the only non-religious magazine that I ever remember having around the house was “The Reader’s Digest”. Later, after developing my own world view, and philosophy and ideas about religion, I would question whether it was “non-religious” or not. (Smile) But one of the segments in the Digest I remember to this day was a “column” called “Give me a man who reads”. I believe it was from the viewpoint of a boss looking for good workers and it might have been an ad rather than an editorial comment. I am at a point in my life where I would like say, “Give me a person who discusses” – who discusses ideas and concepts. There is a saying that goes: “Small minds discuss people; average minds discuss events; and above average minds discuss ideas and concepts.” It doesn’t matter if this quote came from Eleanor Roosevelt or not. (In the sharing and resonating of wisdom, the source doesn’t...

Community and UU and Humanism and HUUmanist As a new member to HUUmanism (Pronounced "HU-U-manism"), I received a welcome packet including two issues of their journal “Religious Humanism”. In the Fall 2012 issue, the Editor’s Preface says “Increasingly, we face a choice, framed elsewhere by Mike Werner, [an author of one of the articles] between secular Humanist groups who do a better job of embodying a rational approach to life, and UU congregations who do a better job of providing full-fledged community.” And several of the articles emphasized the role that “community” plays in UU congregations and also Humanist groups. “Community” is one of those words that we use in everyday parlance and seldom stop to think about. I found myself reacting to the word with the first associations of friendly and welcoming group of people. But as I reflected on the word a bit more, I realized that there was another aspect to it for me that adds a ne...

Date: 6/21/09 To: XXX Re: Article Entitled: “Are We Bankrupting the Country?” Like most demagoguery, this article has some truth, but not in proportion to the level of fear that it hypes. This was created to generate fear, and not to disseminate information. The talks that it mentions by these developing countries [the developing eight countries] is indeed important and should have been more evident in our Main Street Media as the possible ramifications could be great. But this article only tries to bring out the fear factors and presents these possibilities as done deeds. Yes, they were talking about changing the currency and yes, that would severely affect our economy if they did. However, China would wind up hurting financially if the value of the dollar dropped, so it is reluctant. Yes, they were to discuss the currency of the IMF but that is useless as a traded currency, so that...

War Memorials I just found out that there are two half sized Viet Nam Memorials that travel around the country. One of them is now in Malden, MA until June 10th. Here is a link about it. http://artery.wbur.org/2013/06/09/vietnam-moving-wall This is a “miniature” (half sized) of the original Viet Nam Memorial in Washington, D.C. that was designed by Maya Lin. This is a remarkable monument and deserves to be seen by everyone. I’m glad to know that there are two copies that travel around giving even more people an opportunity to view it. It is remarkable because it is based on memorializing the individual soldiers, specifically those who died, rather than honoring some general on a horse or in full regalia. This monument honors those that deserve to be honored. And the way that it honors them is most effective. One cannot help but be struck dumb when in the presence of this memorial. But I would still like a memorial to do mo...
Humanism - Introduction

After not being involved with any churches for a while, and developing my own World View as not believing in any outside authority to tell me what to believe, or what my ethics should be, or what my principles should be, I decided that I would be a Humanist. Since most people do not know what Humanism represents, I found I could accept that label because I could define it myself rather than have other people's stereotypes define me. I hate/detest labels. I am not a Republican, nor a Democrat; I am not a Liberal, nor a Conservative. I do not identify with any label - even American. I prefer to view myself as a Global Citizen rather than a citizen of any tribe or nation. But I needed a label for my World View, and I found that if I could define Humanism myself, I could live with that label. As a Humanist, I believe I have the ability and the responsibility to do all that I can to develop all that it means to be human both in myself and in others. Then c...
